I had an old college friend from nearly forty years ago visit me in France after only seeing one another one time since then about ten years ago as I passed through Chicago. It was a great reconnection rendezvous!
I picked her up in Paris and we went to Bordeaux, Bayonne, Biarritz, Pau and then spent a few days in Paris. Our original plan was to see an exhibit of haute couture at The Louvre, for which we could not get tickets, as well as checking out the newly revamped Notre Dame, which we forewent after seeing it had hundreds waiting in line. Although both slight disappointments, we instead traipsed around Paris, saw Luxemburg Gardens, the Pantheon, Saint Sulpice, and the lighting of the Eiffel Tower.
During her stay, we also ate superlative patisseries and had delicious food, both in restaurants and homemade meals by each of us, including pancit, a Filipino noodle dish on which we once dined back in college, bringing back great memories and inspiring me to add it to my evolving menu lineup.
I’m sure I wore her out with my hyperactive schedule and manic personality, but she had a good time and it reminded me that friends are timeless despite not seeing one another for decades.
