Lately I’ve been on the prowl for rhubarb, but I haven’t been able to find it at grocery stores. I also wanted to get some fresh bread, local Spanish clementines, and a few other Basque goodies, so I decided to take the bus to Saint-Palais again because there is a huge farmers market on Fridays and I thought I’d try my chances.
At first I had no luck finding rhubarb until I discovered a produce table with big, bright clementines luring me to the treasure of hidden rhubarb underneath it. With great satisfaction I continued onward through the outdoor market where I also bought some Basque sausages, and a nut-stuffed baguette encrusted with sesame seeds. Although the countless cheeses, plentiful patisseries, and other charcuterie choices tried to seduce me, the crowd dissuaded me from lingering much longer. Instead I decided to wander around elsewhere to take in some scenery and iron oxide architectural splendor so typical for Le Pays Basque in this corner of France.
